This week I thought we’d take a look at the Federal Government’s recent announcement on the establishment of Innovation Superclusters. The investment of $950 million will be matched by the private sector and is expected to create 50,000 new jobs and increase Canada's GDP by more than $50 billion over 10 years.

Canada's 5 Innovation Superclusters

Digital Technology Supercluster This cluster will focus on virtual, mixed and augmented reality, data collection and analytics and quantum computing. The activities will include R&D projects, support for sector start ups and SMEs and digital skills training for underrepresented groups.

Protein Industries Supercluster This cluster will focus on food and food ingredient manufacturing, ag and food related initiatives, and agri-food technologies such as genomics, processing and information technology. The programming in this cluster will include smart production, financing, data analysis and AI for nutrient and crop management, international trade missions and investment attraction.

Advanced Manufacturing Supercluster This cluster's focus will include the internet of things, machine learning, cybersecurity and additive manufacturing (3D printing). It will include research and development, scale up support, training and work integration, and a solutions concierge for manufacturers and technology firms.

Scale AI Supercluster The focus of this cluster is artificial intelligence and supply chain technology. It will include a match-making system for industry players, AI and supply chain training, start-ups and SMEs and secure data exchange.

Ocean Supercluster. This cluster is focused on digital sensors and monitoring, autonomous marine vehicles, energy generation, automation, marine biotechnology and marine engineering technologies. The cluster will include digitizing marine operations, seed funding, support for STEM programming at post-secondary institutions, and the establishment of a Global Ocean Tech Alliance.
